Culverdale Elementary School, opened in 1975, provides a high-quality educational experience to students in grades pre-kindergarten (PK) through 6. Kobe Koala is our mascot, and our school colors are red, white, and navy blue. Our school's code of conduct is Be Kind, Be Safe, & Be Responsible, which is elaborated by teachers to students based on the particular grade level and area(s) of campus.
Culverdale's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meets once per month, and all community members and staff are invited. Only PTA members can vote on proposed actions, but ideas are valued from all attendees. Most often, childcare is provided for attendees' families (refer to updates in the principal's weekly Parent Square newsletters). Other parent engagement events are advertised and provided several times each year. Each fall, the principal's newsletter communicates opportunities for parents to participate on the School Site Council (SSC) and/or English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). Based on enrollment, Culverdale is a Title 1 school.
Students who speak a language other than English at home are assessed with the Initial ELPAC, soon after they enroll in a California school. Each year, an Annual ELPAC test is administered until the student is reclassified as Fluent English Proficient. Students who are identified as an English Learner are provided with additional supports by teachers and instructional assistants (English Language Development), including 30-minutes per day of ELD designated instruction. For students whose IEP indicates the specific placement, our school has classes for the PK-6th grade "mild/mod Essentials" Specialized Academic Instruction program.
Culverdale's staff has a strong reputation for seeking parent partnerships and providing multi-tiered academic programs based on individual student assessments that drive instruction and interventions. Added in 2023, our Tier 3 intervention teacher provides additional skill-targeted interventions for students whose academic performance deficits are 2-or-more grade levels below standard. Our resource counselor, administration, and classroom staff integrate Social Emotional Learning (SEL) tools into all areas of the school day, as strategies to empower each student with the critical skills of grit and self-regulation. In each grade level, students identified as GATE are clustered and have their learning opportunities differentiated when appropriate. All students benefit from our culture of inclusion and multiple tiers of support at Culverdale.
Both in 1998 and 2012, Culverdale Elementary was recognized as a California Distinguished School. Current performance levels are noted here on the California Dashboard.
By August 2024, the second campus renovation (2017 and 2023-2024) will be completed, funded by the Measure E bond. The most noticeable update is the new multi-purpose building Koala Grove, which includes a large, modern performing arts complex and a meal service area with improved shade coverage for students' lunch tables. The former MPR was converted into a Special Services building for OT, speech, counseling, Adaptive PE, and school psychologist services. Our school's larger parking lot - for parent parking and student drop-off/pick-up - now has solar panel carports since 2021.
While we do not offer campus tours, our office staff would love to welcome you and answer all of your questions.
